Rough Trade zaczął jako londyński sklep z płytami w 1976 roku. Z czasem zamienił się w wytwórnie muzyczną, promując wielu znanych dzisiaj artystów, takich jak The Smiths, The Fall, czy The Strokes. Label aktualnie wchodzi w skład Beggars Group i jest prowadzony przez założyciela Geoffa Travisa oraz Jeannette Lee.
